Symposium: Humanitarian Space and Military Operations – Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Perspectives

26 - 27 November 2008

The Symposium was organized by the Danish Institute for Human Rights, the Danish Red Cross, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Danish Ministry of Defence.

This two-day Symposium examined the interplay between humanitarian space and Western multi-national military operations. This process it inquired into some of the phenomena which currently shapes humanitarian space in conflict ridden areas around the world: non-state armed actors, local perceptions of external interveners, private military security companies, counter-insurgency warfare, concerted planning of action and integrated missions, intertwined security and development agendas, transitional justice, and international criminal law.
