Strategy Process Update

On this page we will keep you updated on the latest developments in the Strategy revision process and help you to get an overview of the overall Strategy design.

Presentation of the Strategy process

The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched in 2008 a comprehensive process for the revision of "Strategic Priorities in Danish Humanitarian Assistance" which was published in 2002. During the past six years the world has seen serious changes in weather-related disasters, food insecurity and, increasingly, complex conflicts and security issues. These trends called for more refined and comprehensive model of humanitarian assistance, strong protection of the humanitarian space, and coordinated international approaches. Denmark has taken a leading role in consolidating state-of-the-art thinking on crucial areas such as future protection challenges, early recovery, the global food crisis, humanitarian consequences of climate change, and humanitarian space and military operations.

The revision process will include three distinct phases:

  • June to November 2008: Public events, consultations, analysis and reflection.
  • November 2008 to January 2009: Formulation of the strategy document.
  • January to April 2009: Hearing, revision and approval
  • 2 September 2009: Launch of the new strategy.

A review of Denmark's performance in relation to the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles will be undertaken as a separate study to ensure that lessons from past experience are fed into directions for the future.

A series of thematic events involving international key actors and experts offer creative platforms for joint reflecting on the major challenges that humanitarian actors are currently facing. The outcomes of these events will in turn feed information into the revised humanitarian strategy.
